Works For Me

The neighborhood is nearly as downtown as Seattle is, I hope, likely to get, so all black all the time works for wardrobe. Going out into slightly more remote areas can be challenging. Beige seems to fill the bill for more relaxed locations, and it mixes well with black, if necessary -30-

Rose Time

This is a good week to walk around Capitol Hill. The local roses are at their best, because last winter's record awful weather is paying off. I recommend starting with the church yard at the north end of Broadway on the east side of the street.

Woodland Park zoo is home to the local rose society's test garden. It's a lovely urban retreat early of a summer morning -30-

Bare Bones

Decades of honing inventory to essentials have left the interior spare and flexible. The approach is in harmony with the overall eighteenth-century sensibility of the architecture. It is trivial to respond to major changes in the way we use it. Over the week-end, we added another resident and another small business. All I had to do was put an extra set of towels on the rack -30-

Double Duty

A super-luxurious self-inflating air mattress from the Great Big Hiking Co-op is earning its price in the field and as an ideal cushion for sleeping on the floor. This high-tech version of a futon is proving very convenient. Street shoes stay at the door, so the floor is clean. An Oregon Round-up blanket makes a good ground cloth. I

Since much of my wardrobe lives in a cedar chest, there's room in the closet to fold and stash the mattress. It's a simple way to manage a room that leaves plenty of space to do other things, makes it easy to clean, and guarantees at least a minor workout twice a day -30-
